Our simple guide to getting more from metal recycling
If you’re new to metal recycling, you may be wondering how you can get paid the most during your next visit to your local EMR.
When you bring metal to us, our friendly team will guide you through proper metal recycling practices and provide pricing based on current market value.
That’s why understanding how to recycle metal the right way matters. A little know-how helps you maximize what you earn and avoid getting turned away at the gate for something a yard doesn’t accept, which can happen.
Before heading to EMR, it pays to get familiar with the process and the basics of ferrous versus non-ferrous materials, especially if you’re just getting started.
Make the most money with clean metals
Looking to recycle the right way? Start by cleaning metals.
Clean metals are the key to getting the best return on your recycling. A little extra effort goes a long way and pays off at the scale. Remember, we process tons of metal daily and the better you sort your metals, the quicker it will be to put that old metal to new use. Contaminating metal loads can even lead to them not being reused, as the quality and purity of the product won’t meet manufacturing standards.
By sorting your metals and removing non-metal materials from items like plastic casings on wiring, appliances and piping, you will take home more cash, get weighed and paid quicker and make a more positive impact on our environment.
Confirm what’s accepted with your local yard
Every metal recycler accepts different materials, so it’s always a good idea to check with your local yard before making the trip. A quick call can save you time and the frustration of having items turned away.
Some yards, including EMR, don’t accept e-waste and items with lithium-ion batteries such as laptops, cell phones, hoverboards and e-bike batteries because they can pose serious fire risks. For these items, we recommend finding an authorized local business that can recycle them safely and responsibly.
Hazardous items, including propane tanks and other pressurized containers, are also generally not accepted at EMR and many yards. They pose a fire and safety risk for the yard and the community.
But you can bring them to your neighborhood store that sells propane or a local waste management business that has designated areas for pressurized containers.

Values differ between ferrous and non-ferrous metals
Knowing the difference between ferrous and non-ferrous metals can make a real difference.
While prices shift with the market, non-ferrous metals typically pay more than ferrous ones because they’re rarer and in higher demand.

Non-ferrous metals

- Titanium
- Precious metals (Gallium, gold, iridium, palladium, platinum, silver or any combo of these metals)
